For Our Readers!
I won’t be surprised if you think gardening is a piece of cake! You plant seeds in the soil, water them and they’ll provide you with a good bounty, right?
Well, good luck with that!
Anyone who has attempted to build a garden for the first time will be confounded by the mysteries of plant life. Your plants will germinate but wilt away, they’ll grow up nicely but the leaves will turn yellow and the plant will die, or they’ll be lush green but won’t flower. You’ll even face situations where your flowers will bloom abundantly but won’t produce fruits or the fruits will emerge only to be eaten away by squirrels and other confounded pests!
But don’t let me scare you away with these frightful stories. If you’re keen on growing your own fresh vegetables or wish to sit amongst a glorious bed of flowers when you’re sipping your morning cup of tea, you can do it!
And don’t need a master’s degree to do it either!

About Me
My name is Adeline Gear and I live in hot and sunny Chennai, in India. Despite living in a rented house for over 40 years, I’ve managed to have my own garden space for a long time. In my younger days I loved sitting in my tiny garden, amongst the green foliage and bright blossoms, watching the little brown sparrows build their nests on my lime tree and squeak and chirp to their heart’s content in the evenings when they came home to roost!
I enjoyed cutting drumsticks from my big old Moringa tree and sharing the bounty with my neighbours and friends. I certainly delighted in the bright yellow cosmos flowers that danced in the summer breeze and enjoyed the sights of the gorgeous purple and pink Decembers in the cool winters.
However, my garden endeavors came to an end when I had to move houses some years ago. The absence of space in the various apartment blocks that I moved to over the years left me with little opportunity to set up a garden space. (It can be very frustrating when the neighbours’ kids sneak in and steal all the hibiscus and rose flowers that blossomed so beautifully in your space!) Although I did carry around a pot or two, the good old garden days seemed pretty much over.
A few years back, I moved into an individual house and got an opportunity to set up a tiny garden. My backyard has a couple of coconut trees and a mango tree and I planted a few banana trees as well. But all attempts to grow other plants failed, thanks to the falling leaves of the coconut trees.
This year, when the prices of the vegetables hit the sky, I decided to set up an organic garden on my terrace. I started with just a few plants, made a lot of mistakes and am constantly learning and finding ways where I can economically grow my own vegetables.
There are plenty of challenges though – crazy winds, blistering sun and mischievous bees and squirrels being some factors completely out of my control!
However, I am constantly trying new things and experimenting with my plants, soil, and fertilizers to find better ways to grow a great garden with less effort and cost.
My Vision
My goal is to set up a self sufficient garden and to help others do the same. I believe in my heart that anyone can be a gardener. With just the right frame of mind and determination, you can have a simple garden space in your home or an extravagant setup to chill out in the spare time!
